“Jewellery Box” for Safe Keeping

The design and construction of an 8000 sqm self-storage facility for Vanguard Holdings Ltd on Church Road, one of the main arterial routes into Bristol City Centre, with excellent transport links to the M32.

The scheme received full planning approval and construction started in August 2018.

The scheme has been planned to achieve a 20% reduction in typical energy consumption by utilising solar energy. The large shallow pitched roof to the new warehouse features south facing PV panels which will generate a large amount of the energy required to both heat and light the building. The existing brick warehouse and new warehouse are linked with a largely glazed atrium, which acts as a circulation space between the two and features a suspended English Electric Lightning fighter plane.

The existing brick warehouse has been opened up at ground level to create a new coffee shop on Church Road that will enliven and activate the street whilst also creating local employment opportunities. The new steel portal frame building is clad with a combination of semi translucent polycarbonate panels, glazing and coloured metal cladding creating a light and elegant “jewellery box” for the safe storage of personal possessions.

The building opened its doors to the public in September 2019.
