A Legacy of Design at the University of Oxford

Oxford Architects has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the University of Oxford, contributing to its renowned estate through carefully considered architecture spanning several decades. Our early work with the University reflects our deep understanding of its architectural heritage and our ability to deliver buildings that respect tradition while serving contemporary needs.

In 1964, we completed a major student accommodation scheme for Balliol College, marking one of our earliest interventions within the collegiate University. In 1986, Partner Geoffrey Beard designed a new music room for Corpus Christi College, sensitively integrated into its historic setting. At St Cross College, our design for a new south wing was realised in 1991, extending the college’s footprint and enhancing its facilities.

Our work at Somerville College includes the Dorothy Hodgkin Building, completed in 1990. This project also housed the Margaret Thatcher Centre, reflecting the evolving academic and cultural ambitions of the College.

These projects represent just a selection of our legacy within the University of Oxford – one built on collaboration, respect for context, and a dedication to architectural excellence. Whether delivering new buildings or carefully considered additions to listed structures, Oxford Architects has consistently responded to the unique challenges of the University estate, leaving a legacy that continues to shape its architectural fabric.
